Business Intelligence/Data Warehousing

For over a year, I've been reading a little bit about Data Warehousing and ETL (extract, transformation, and load).  Head over to Tod McKenna's blog to read more about this.  I haven't really paid much attention to what it's all about and how the concepts can be applied in the work I do.

That changed today.

During a work-related technical meeting, I saw first-hand how data warehousing and BI can be a very powerful thing.  I was also exposed to something I hadn't heard of before:  a Star Schema.  This is something I have not yet learned or heard about (which I feel slightly embarrassed about, but also intrigued at the same time).

I'll definitely take a closer look at these new concepts.

Digsby

I discovered a new social networking client recently called Digsby (http://www.digsby.com).  You can set up most of the major email services (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL/AIM Mail, IMAP, and POP) and some social sites (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and LinkedIn).  You can also manage all your IM accounts as well (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, Jabber, and Facebook Chat Accounts).

It's great to finally have a useful tool to keep up with all my accounts all in one spot!

Cool Tool: Copy File Path to Clipboard

I often find that I need to refer to the full path of a file in some program or document.  There's a few ways of getting it, the most common to drag the file to the Windows Run dialog.  Then you can copy the full path and file name to the clipboard and paste it wherever.  Well, that officially got old today.

So, I found this cool tool:  ClipboardPath.  Just download it and install it and you'll get a new menu option when you right-click on a file (Copy Path to Clipboard).

In Houston

Yesterday (12-Nov-2008) I woke up at 3:15AM (ouch) so I could get a flight to Houston for a 3-day training course (see previous post).  When I got to DFW airport, I discovered my flight was way delayed.  Fortunately there was a flight about to take off to Houston that I was able to get on.  Turns out that was a good thing because I had just enough time once I got to Houston Intercontinental Airport to find my way to EPS's offices.  I was already exhausted!

Claudio Lassala was the presenter of the day.  I got a lot of good information (but it's never enough or too much!).  But I was so relieved to finally get to my hotel last night (which is where I'm at right now posting this blog entry).  I went to sleep around 8:00PM.  It was nice to get a good solid nights sleep.

So, I was refreshed for today's session with Mike Yeager.

I was fortunate to eat lunch with both Claudio and Mike (actually along with other attendees).  They're both really good guys.

I'm leaving out a lot of the details for now.  Once I go back over my notes and get the powerpoint slides, I'll give a full review of what all I learned, what was useful, what wasn't, etc.

Time for bed.  I go home back to Fort Worth tomorrow.  Smile

.NET Training

I'll be heading to Houston on November 12th for a 3-day training course in .NET specifcally for FoxPro developers.  Claudio Lassala and Mike Yeager of EPS Software will be going over several aspects of .NET and how it relates to VFP/FoxPro.   Should be an exciting event!

ASP.NET, AJAX and Me

This entry is long overdue.  In the last few months I have been stepping up my pace on the project I've been working on with my esteemed colleague Eric.  I can't disclose any details on the project at this point, however.  What I can disclose is that I have thus far created the SQL database for the project.  That actually went pretty fast even though that was my first legitimate SQL Server database (it probably still needs some fine tuning, though).

Ever since I set up the database, I've been trying to get to the point where I can actually add information to it.  Eric had already created a very basic entry page that was mainly for me to base my database design on.  I decided to take that and add actual code and constraints.  Below is what I've done thus far:

  • Added validation controls to some fields (so certain items don't get left blank)
  • Bound data to a few controls (drop-down lists)
  • Created a few stored procedures in the database (one that let's me determine if something already exists in a given table)
  • After a long struggle and a bit of confusion, installed the AJAX Control Toolkit (now I know how to attach the extenders to EXISTING controls)

I need to now actually write some code for various parts of the page.  I want to see if I can write code that will let me use the AutoComplete extender on one of the fields (so that as you type in the field, you'll get a list of matches in the associated table).  Then I need to write some more stored procedures and ensure all tables are updated with the "Save" button is clicked (several tables will need to be references and/or updated during the process).

More to follow very soon!  Pizza

C#/VB.NET Code Converter

Just learned about a cool site from Franklin Garzón's blog (http://weblogs.foxite.com/fgarzonhz/default.aspx) that lets you convert C# code to VB.NET code (and vice versa).

I'm sure to use these tools a lot in the future!
